I chose Yoko Ono as my change agent because I am deeply inspired by her art, writing, music, and other works. I was especially inspired by her article, The Feminization of Society, which I find very similar to many other feminist articles we have read in class. It is interesting to see the similarities between what she wrote in the 1970s to other feminist writers of the time, as well as modern feminist authors. Although she is quite radical, proposing for a complete change of society, I find much of what she says to be true and show many possibilities for an improvement in our sexist, racist, patriarchal society.
I have found that there is a tendency for people to only look at Yoko Ono through the lens of her relationship to John Lennon and The Beatles. Many see her popularity as something that should only be contributed to her involvement with Lennon. I see this as greatly insulting to her, and degrading to all of the work and contributions she has made to the feminist movement. Although it is not wholly false to say that Ono received more recognition due to Lennon's help, but much of her work was quite controversial regardless of whatever publicity Lennon helped her to receive.
I admire Yoko Ono for standing up against the racism and sexism she experienced while being a part of the rock community. Through her music, she has openly supported feminism, same-sex marriage, and pacifism. Her artistic demonstrations and filmography have not been overly popular with the media, however over time she has managed to gain public acceptance through much of her feminist and anti-war messages. Even after Lennon's death, she positively preached the same messages she had preached while he was alive, including their War is Over campaign, which was quite positively received all over the world.
Despite being in her late 70s, she continues to present herself in the media and is quite active on social media websites as well. Her own website, Imagine Peace, continuously updates the world with Ono's current projects, interviews, etc. The website presents many of Ono's feminist projects, including various articles she has written, protests against environmental issues, such as fracking, and her continuous callings on the importance of pacifism. Other than on her website, Ono is active on sites such as Twitter, Facebook, Youtube, Instagram, and so forth. I think this is extremely admirable because she is keeping current with modern technology and using it to get the messages she has been preaching for years to the world.
